If you feel like your clients boss you around and walk all over you it’s because you’re letting them.
When you find yourself frustrated because things aren’t going your way, you only have yourself to blame.
And I get it… You just got this new customer. You want to make sure they’re happy. You want to make sure you’re doing your best. You want that testimonial. The referral. The rest of the payment. Etc. Etc.
But, did you get into this business to be miserable? Or did you get into this business because you wanted more freedom? More flexibility. More control.
Almost every mentee I have that’s new to the business world experiences this issue. They come to me excited as soon as they sign up a new client, and then shortly after, usually on our next call, I notice a huge drop in their energy.
“Hey, what’s going on? You seem a little off. Talk to me. What happened?”
“Remember that client I signed up last week? Well, they’re changing the terms on me.
They want more for less, and they want it done quicker than we agreed.”
Their excitement turned into frustration and anxiety.
Why?
Because they gave away their power.
They forgot the fact that they’re now a BUSINESS OWNER and went back into the frame of their EMPLOYEE MINDSET.
As a business owner, YOU SET THE TERMS. YOU CALL THE SHOTS. YOU DECIDE HOW YOU WORK. And if your prospects don’t like it, you kindly tell them what you will and won’t accept and you move on to find someone else who does.
Sure, negotiations happen. Compromises take place. But if you’re constantly going to forget the value you bring to the table and only think about the paycheck, you might as well close shop and go get a job.
Being in business for yourself means you get to set the terms on HOW YOU DO BUSINESS.
You get to carve out your own path. Your own unique and special way of doing things.
So, make sure your clients know that.
Make sure they know you’re working WITH them, not FOR them.
